The hotels history started around 1900, when it was a popular holiday resort for bathers from one of the largest beer brewery in Norway, Ringnes bryggerier. In 1932 Norwegians post and Telecommunications Authority bought the hotel for approximately 4500 Euros or 40 000 Nok. A dramatic event happened in the 2nd world war. In 1945 the German slave ship "Donau" was sunken in the bay of Skiphelle, after sabotage from the Norwegian Resistance group. "Donau" was raised in 1952, but some parts of the cargo is still left in the fjord.
